What is COVID-19?
COVID-19 is a virus. It is one of several coronaviruses. These viruses cause respiratory illness.
How is it spread?
COVID-19 is spread through droplet transmission. So when an infected person coughs, sneezes, drips (their nose runs, for example), or exhales, microscopic bits of the virus go into the air and other people can catch it. You need to be within six feet of an infected person to catch the virus. They do not have to be symptomatic. Everyone exhales when they breathe. That’s why this virus is so contagious.
What are the symptoms?
Fever, cough, running nose, (sometimes) sore throat, difficulty breathing. The cough tends to be a dry cough. Some people complain of feeling achy and tired, and there are some reports of diarrhea.
Can I get tested?
The United States does not have enough tests right now. Doctors are doing their best to decide who needs to be tested and ensure those individuals are tested. If you are not symptomatic then you cannot get tested.
Is there a vaccine?
No. There is no vaccine at this time, but scientists around the globe are working to try to create one.
Should I wear a face mask?
If you are sick and have access to a face mask then you should wear one. If you have another condition like cystic fibrosis where you are always recommended to wear masks when in public then you should continue to do so.
If you are not sick then you should not wear a face mask unless you are taking care of someone who is sick.
