New research indicates that the coronavirus can survive on surfaces for up to three days. It is very important that you clean surfaces, especially frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs and phone screens, daily.
But what is the best way to clean them to ensure you kill the virus? Well, COVID-19 has a lipid envelope–that’s the part of the cell that sort of seals the virus in–and it’s basically made out of fat. That means that this virus can be killed with basic soap and water, and your basic household cleaners.
Bleach, ammonia, and alcohol based cleaners are great. The good news here, though, is that if you do not have those, it’s okay! Soap and water and regular cleaning agents can kill COVID-19 with a bit of elbow grease and scrubbing. Baby wipes, however, which are frequently used to wipe down surfaces, do not contain soap or any of the previously mentioned products and won’t kill this virus.
Also be sure to wipe down your cell phones and touch screen devices with alcohol based technology wipes.
